Final External Unit

Task 1: Planning

My candidate number: . My centre number: 17343.
My name is James Sloper . The instrument I will be playing for this performance is a Tenor Horn. The brief requires me to play 10-15 minutes of me performing pieces of music that i have selected.
Through my performance, I want to achieve the following personal goals:
  1. Personal Goal 1: to play each of the pieces to the best of my ability.
  2. Personal Goal 2: to practice each piece effectively and efficiently.
  3. Personal Goal 3: I want to use this opportunity to lower my stage fright.

To help achieve the above goals, I think I have the following skills that I can use:
  1. Skill 1: My first good skill is practicing regularly and understanding each pieces rhythm.
  2. Skill 2: My second good skill is having the will to face my fear of the stage.
  3. Skill 3: My third good skill is being able to play the instrument.

I will know if I have achieved my goals at the end of the assessment because my performance will show if I have made the pieces sound good, I've conquered my fear of the stage and played well.

The audience I am performing to is a talent scout from A&R Records. Their expectations will be a few music pieces played to a very high standard. I will meet their expectations by playing 3-4 pieces to a high quality.

I will perform music in the classical pieces with a piano accompaniment . This is because it is the style of what I'm playing.
My personal image for the event will be formal, I will wear my school uniform, and I will try to be as professional as I can be with minimal interruptions. I will also aim to stay composed as I become tired out after playing over time. this is appropriate as my audience will be examining my performance in detail, causing me to aim to be professional.
My ideas for the performance are  to be smart and professional. I intend to run through all my pieces with little to no gaps or pauses. I will do it by being well prepared and efficient.

The set list I will perform will contain the following songs:
  1. Song 1: Artist/Band: Henry Mancini .Song title: Pink Panther .Estimated length of song: approx. 2 minutes. I have chosen this song because I love the style of the piece.
  2. Song 2:  Artist/Band: Grieg .Song title: Morning .Estimated length of song: approx. 1m30s. I have chosen this song because I think it will give me enough time to restore myself after playing Yesterday; I have also picked this piece as I love how it flows.
  3. Song 3: Artist/Band: The Beatles .Song title: Yesterday .Estimated length of song: Approx. 2m30s . I have chosen this song because I love the overall feel of the piece due to its sectioning.
  4. Song 4: Artist/Band: Bernstein .Song title: One Hand, One Heart .Estimated length of song: approx 1m30s . I have chosen this song because it will be a lovely end to my pieces that i play on my own.
  5. Song 5: Artist/Band: Snarky Puppy .Song title: Lingus .Estimated length of song: approx 3-5 minutes. I have chosen this song because it is a nice group band piece.
The total estimated length of my set list will therefore be approx. 11 minutes and 30 seconds.
I have chosen to play these songs in the order Yesterday, Morning, Pink Panther, One Hand One Heart. This is because I have to open with Yesterday as it has the highest pitch range; so takes the most effort, I have placed Morning next as it has a very small pitch range; to allow me to recover, Pink Panther is placed next as I want to end on One Hand, One Heart and because its a popular song, I will end  on One hand, One heart because I like its smoothness. Lingus is played with the Jazz bend of my school so it is played after One Hand, One Heart.

I will need to involve the following people in my performance Jazz Band. This is because I need an ensemble to play this piece as my instrument is in the background.

I will need the following resources and equipment: a music stand and my sheet music.

When performing live, I will need to consider the following health and safety issues:
Health & Safety Issue 1: tripping up. How I will make sure I am safe be environmentally aware.
Health & Safety Issue 2: throat drying up. How I will make sure I am safe bring water.
Health & Safety Issue 3: noise level. How I will make sure I am safe keeping it at a tuneful level.
Health & Safety Issue 4: lighting. How I will make sure I am safe limiting the amount of light falls on me to stop being blinded.
I used the following website(s) to help me with my research wikipedia.

I will need to spend 20 hours at school preparing, performing and evaluating the event. I will spend my time by doing  many, many rehearsals.

Plan: to be completely ready .
What went well:  kinda the whole thing, I think I've polished it very well.
What needs work: hitting all the high notes well.

Task 3: Evaluation
Strengths Reflection:

i think i improved since the dress rehearsal as i added more pieces and perfected to the others to the best of my ability

I think i helped add to the bass of Lingus; my other pieces were solo. In my solo pieces i thought i had good pitch control and i had a continuous use of dynamics to the best of my ability.
Improvement Reflection:

I'd have practiced more for a longer period of time, and worked harder.

Improvement #1: hitting the high notes
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?: practice only the high notes over a long period of time, to become more accustomed to them.
Improvement #2: breathing technique
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?: work on my lung capacity to allow for a longer stamina
Improvement #3: pitching
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?: practice even more
Feedback from others:

Piece One - Your rhythms are good and accurate but your pitches are not. Please practice these thoroughly to ensure that your pitches are accurate.
Piece Two - Again, your rhythms are good but your pitches are inaccurate. Please make sure this is well practiced.

this feedback helped me realise i need to work more in future and practice more
Conclusion:

Overall, I thought my performance wasn't the best I could do, but I think I had a relatively competent performance, showcasing what skill I have, if I could do it again I would try to have a larger lung capacity and work on hitting the highest notes.
